Ledger Live Desktop has been officially renamed to Ledger Wallet™ (formerly Ledger Live™). It is the desktop companion application for managing your crypto assets with a Ledger hardware wallet. The key distinction is that there is no email or password login—your Ledger device is the only key required to access your accounts, and your data stays locally on your computer .

System Requirements

Before installing, ensure your computer meets the minimum specifications. The app requires a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768 . Important compatibility notes: ARM64 architectures (such as Ubuntu arm64 or Windows arm64) are not supported—only x86_64/AMD64 is compatible. Virtual machines and Surface Pro devices are also not officially supported .

Installation Steps

  1. Download from the official source: Navigate to https://www.ledger.com/ledger-wallet to download the correct installer for your operating system. Never download from third-party mirrors .
  2. Install the application:
    • macOS: Open the .dmg file and drag the app to your Applications folder.
    • Windows: Run the .exe installer and follow the prompts. You may see a Microsoft SmartScreen warning—click “Yes” to proceed, as this is normal for apps not distributed through the Microsoft Store .
    • Linux: Use the AppImage file. You may need to install libfuse2 and configure udev rules for USB device access .
  3. Connect your Ledger device: Use the provided USB cable to connect your hardware wallet to your computer. The app will detect the device and perform an authenticity check to confirm it is genuine .
  4. Set up or restore: If using a new device, select “Set up as new device” and create a PIN directly on the hardware. Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase—write this down on paper and store it offline. If you already have a recovery phrase, select “Restore” and enter it using the device buttons .
  5. Install crypto apps: Within the app, go to the “Manager” section to install applications for the specific cryptocurrencies you want to manage (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum). These apps are installed onto your hardware device .
  6. Add accounts: Navigate to the “Accounts” tab, click “Add account,” and select the cryptocurrency. Follow the prompts to sync your accounts and view your portfolio .

Security Essentials

  • Never share your 24-word recovery phrase. Ledger will never ask for it. Entering it into a computer or website can result in permanent loss of funds .
  • Confirm transactions on your device. Every send or swap must be physically approved on the Ledger hardware screen before it executes .
  • Keep the app updated. The latest versions (such as 4.21.0 and later) include security improvements and bug fixes. Updates are delivered through the app itself .
  • Verify addresses carefully. When receiving funds, always compare the address shown in the app with the one displayed on your hardware device screen .
